The Smile Mission was born from a simple belief: quality dental care should be accessible to everyone.

In the United States, millions of people struggle to access the dental care they need because of the high cost of treatment. After years of working overseas and volunteering in more than 30 countries, Dr. Pfundheller returned to America with a clear goal: to help address the dental care crisis at home.

In 2021, The Smile Mission opened its first location in South Miami, Florida, with a vision that was simple but ambitious — provide high-quality dental care at a price more people could afford.

From that first office, The Smile Mission began to grow. What started as a single location became a growing family of dental offices, all built around the same values: quality care, accessible pricing, modern dentistry, and treating every patient with compassion and respect.

We believe that affordability should never mean sacrificing quality. Our goal is to make exceptional dental care accessible to more individuals and families, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Our Mission

Today, we are continuing to grow with the same vision that started it all: to make high-quality dental care more affordable and accessible to everyone.

And we’re not stopping in South Florida.

Our long-term vision is to bring The Smile Mission to communities across the United States, making quality dental care accessible to more people, in more places, every day.

One location started the mission. Now, we’re building a movement.

HIS VISION – MAKE DENTAL CARE AFFORDABLE FOR EVERYONE

Dr. Dustin Pfundheller, D.M.D, was raised by two public school teachers in Altoona, Wisconsin, a small town two hours east of Minneapolis. As a high school valedictorian, Dustin immersed himself in sports, music, and leadership activities. He majored in mathematics at University of Wisconsin –River Falls setting a university record in honors courses. He was thrilled to escape Wisconsin winters by attending The University of Florida College of Dentistry in Gainesville, where he was a housing director and presided over several organizations including: Dental Student Government, The Florida American Student Dental Association, and Graduate Student Government.

Studies estimate that 26% of Americans suffer from untreated dental decay. America is one of the richest countries in the world– yet a huge percentage of population can’t afford basic oral health care. Too many Americans have mortgaged their house or ruined their credit score due to needing expensive dental work.

Why are American dental prices so much higher than any other country in the world?

Dr. Pfundheller showed that if a few small changes were made in the dental clinic the patients could receive better quality care at a much lower price. People in the dental field refused to believe the idea. Construction dental companies refused to build The Smile Mission. All banks denied loans to an affordable dental clinic. Eventually after two years and thousands of dollars lost – a small bank, Live Oak Bank, approved the loan for The Smile Mission.
